I am delighted to have been selected to show Partial Eclipse in the exhibition ‘Catch The Sun’, at the Corn Exchange Gallery in Dorchester, managed by Dorchester Arts and running from Tues 24th March to Sat 11th April 2026.
I created Partial Eclipse during the artist residency, ‘Watching The Sun’, run by The Royal Astronomical Society and Mayes Creative. It was inspired by Yantar Mantar, the naked eye observatory in Jaipur, India built by Jai Singh II in 1720s, where I studied Vrihat Samrat, a vast equinoctial sundial with a gnomen 27 metres high. The shadows it cast were used to observe the diurnal passage of the Sun throughout the astronomical year. I have brought this concept into my practice and take discarded objects to cast umbral and penumbral shadows onto light sensitive paper according to John Herschel’s chemical Cyanotype process. By mixing a sensitizing solution of ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide my works are developed by harnessing the UV light of our Sun to create vibrant Cyan-blue prints. The artwork shown here is from a limited edition of giclées based on my original Cyanotype.
The exhibition will coincide with the presentation of Luke Jerram’s Helios also at the Corn Exchange over the 2026 Easter holidays. Helios, a seven metre diameter representation of the Sun at an approximate scale of 1:200 million, features 72dpi detailed imagery of the Sun’s surface – each centimetre of the internally lit spherical artwork represents 2000km of the Sun’s surface. This artwork is the latest in a series of celestial artworks by Jerram, who has previously exhibited Museum of The Moon and Mars in Dorchester in 2019 and 2022 respectively.
